Be it Tungsten Carbide Tipped saw blades, router cutters, planer blades or any other type of tooling, once the sharp edge goes then the finish that is produced diminishes and more load is placed on the motor. To prevent this from happening blades should be sharpened on a regular basis. The cost of sharpening compared to the cost of replacing a blade that is so badly worn it can never get its edge back is just sound business practice.
From T.C.T to P.C.D
Years ago the standard was alloy circular saw blades, on the plus side these blades could be sharpened by anyone with a file but the real problem was the fact that they became blunt very quickly. Then as the cost came down T.C.T ( Tungsten Carbide Tip ) saw blades became the only blades to use, but with the durability and longer run times came the problem of sharpening them. We Sharpen all blades on CNC machines with Diamond Wheels.
In today's high production environment sometimes something even more durable is needed and that's where P.C.D (PolyCrystalline Diamond) is starting to become more used. The lifetime increases as much as 160:1, see chart below.
